Lesson 2 - Math
Daisy Chains
Multiples and conversion of metric
units in order to calculate
the number of daisys required to complete a necklace.
1. Focus and Review
Review with the students how to find multiples.
Have the students count using multiples with several different numbers.
2. Objectives
-
Students will determine the number of daisies necessary to make 3 cm of
necklace. Then, using multiples, detemine the number of daisies necssary
to make a neclace large enough for them.
-
Students will use multiples to compute the number of beads necessary to
complete daisy chain necklace large enough for them.
-
Students will complete a daisy chain using traditional Cherokee methods.
3. Teacher Input
-
We will have a guest speaker to visit our class to explain and demonstrate
how to make a traditional daisy chain necklace using commercially produced
glass seed beads.
-
I will also review how to measure using the Metric System.
4. Guided Practice
Students will compute the numbers of beads and daisy needed for their necklaces.
The students will compute the number of beads and daisies necessary to
complete necklaces of various lengths.
As students are working, the teacher will circulate to ensure that the
numbers are correct.
5. Independent Practice
-
Students will complete the necklaces.
-
To practice the math skill, the students will be given various lengths
and asked to calculate how many daisies would be necessary to complete
a necklace.
6. Closure
-
As the students finish their necklaces, they will be asked to model their
handiwork.
