1. Focus and Review

We have been using Palm Pilots and cameras in our classroom to record the events that have taken place here.  We have also been exploring the Cherokee culture through student shared activities.  Since we are trying to incorporate as much of the Cherokee culture into our class as possible, it is important that we understand the traditional way of life of the Cherokee Nation.  We will be taking afield trip to the Oconaluftee Indian Village in Cherokee, North Carolina.  We will produce video and computer presentations for our parents and peers to teach them our new found information on traditional Cherokee ways.

2. Objectives

NCSCS Technology Objective 2.1 Use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data. (SI)
  1. Students will visit the Oconoluftee Indian Village in Cherokee, North Carolina.
  2. Students will witness first hand the traditional ways of life, crafts, and government of the Cherokee prior to the         introduction of foreigners and after the removal in the 1830s.
  3. While visiting the Village, the students will record on their Palm Pilots interesting facts about the Cherokee.
  4. The students will use the digital still camera and the digital video camera to record the visit.
  5. The students will create a Power point presentation of their visit to share with parents during a parent night.
  6. The students will create two multimedia presentations on Cherokee medicinal herbs and plants and Cherokee history using Power point and Windows media player.

3. Teacher Input

4. Guided Practice

After the trip, the students will go to the school's computer lab or using our school's mobil lab, whichever is available, to download their Palm Pilot information to a word processing program.  They will also use Photo Studio to prepare the pictures for use in a Power point slide show.  The students will discuss as small groups the new things they have learned and refute any false statements listed on the class poster.

5. Independent Practice

Students will complete the slide show presentation.  Students will incorporate a short video segment from the trip in their Power Point display.  The slide show presentations can focus on a specific demonstration viewed during the trip, or the students may produce an overall tour of the Village.

6. Closure

Our parents and other fifth grade classes will be invited to view our Power point presentations on our trip to the Village.  We will present all of our videos and work on that day as a celebration of the hard work we have done.
