Lesson 6 - Cherokee Language
Palm Pilots

Our class was featured on the Department of Public Instruction Star Schools program in November.  The program is 4 hours long.  We are the last 30 minutes of the program.  Below is a link that will take you to the program.  The program highlights innovative technology integration that assesses student learning.  You might find it very interesting.  Our segment is "Program 4: Using Technology Tools to Support the Assessment Cycle".

1. Focus and Review

We have been working on learning the Cherokee Language for several weeks now.  We are going to use a new tool, called a Palm Pilot to try to improve your knowledge of the language.  I know that none of you have used these before, so we are going to spend some time just playing around with them and getting used to what they can do and how they work.

2. Objectives

2.1 Use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data. (SI)

3. Teacher Input

I will instruct the students on the proper use of Palm Pilots.  I will teach them Graffiti text and how to accept and send beamed messages.

4. Guided Practice

I will beam a message to the students to their personal Palm Pilot as a class.  The students will then reply to my message by beaming the correct response to me on my Palm Pilot.  When the students have successfully beamed a response to me, they will divide up into pairs and quiz each other on Cherokee words.

5. Independent Practice

The students will continue to quiz each other using the Palm Pilots.  The students will gradually work themselves from beaming one word to beaming phrases and complete sentences.
Using the Hot Sync program, print out a conversation to practice with a partner and perform for the class.

6. Closure

To show what they have learned, the students will invite their parents to the classroom as well as the administration to see our Palm Pilot project.  The students will also instruct the high school classes on the proper use of the Palm Pilots.
