1. Focus and Review
As we have been studying the Cherokee culture, I have provided you with all the information that you have needed or have told you specifically where to locate the information. Today, and for the next couple of days, we will be using the mobil web to search the Library of Congress site for historical information on the Cherokee Indians.
2. Objectives
2.1 Use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data. (SI)
I will review the appropriate use of the Internet with the students. Using the overhead project for my computer, I will show the students how to navigate the Library of Congress web site. I will also teach and remind the students of pertinent copyright rules and documentation procedures for Internet sources. I will help the students brainstorm words to use in their search to find information.
4. Guided Practice
The students will search and document the information that they find while searching the LOC.
5. Independent Practice
The students will create a poster (or if they are fairly proficient, a Power Point presentation) of the information that they find on the LOC. When the class presents the materials, we will have a class discussion of the projects. Hopefully, the students will see that the information is repeated frequently because there are very few resources for Cherokee history and culture on the LOC digitized sight. The students will then brainstorm ideas to improve and increase the resources available on the LOC. As partners, the students will write letters to the director of the LOC suggesting ways to improve the coverage of the Cherokee.
6. Closure
We will mail the letters as a class. We will choose a couple of the exceptional letters and email them to the LOC site.
