This unit plan is designed to increase student’s understanding of the reasons leading to the use of Africans as slaves in the Americas. Activities allow students the opportunity to explore the impact of the transatlantic slave trade on the African people and helps students examine the life of Africans before being forced into slavery. Through study and creation of traditional crafts, students will gain an understanding of the rich cultural heritage of the African people. There is a focus on the Experiences of the Africans on their journey to the America's by incorporating the novel, The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox.
This unit starts with a hands-on lesson in science on ecosystems. Students will build their own ecosystems and monitor the health of their "environment." The project continues with a study of the effects of development, farming, road run-off, and other environmental issues that affect the Little Tennessee watershed in Macon County.
