4th - 8th Grade Lesson Plan

This is a project that demonstrates changes in education in Swain County since schools were first organized, including teaching practices, buildings, social issues, families, and visual displays.

This photo came from the collections of David Monteith and is of Cane Brook School taken in the late 1800's-to-early-l900's.

If I Could Paint

I wish I could paint
I'd paint you a memory
That would change you forever
Seer your heart and open your eyes
To the living-breathing songs of nature

If I could paint
I'd paint these hills in all their glory
A crystal blue blanket hugging jutting slopes
Rivers of glistening Amber resin

If I could paint
I'd paint the sounds that sing to heaven
Of katydids, peat frog orchestras with cricket violins
And Grampus' singing accompaniment
The coming of twilight spring

If I could paint
I'd paint you my love and you'd cry tears of everlasting joy
To rain undeterred down your cheeks
Sprinkling on children to create rivers of happiness
Whose paint stained canvas
Smudges…..changes……seers an ocean of families
I wish I could paint
